Susan Muermann Nelson
Susan Muermann Nelson joined the Mesabi Musical Theatre Board in 2014 as Member-At-Large to fill out a remaining term of an outgoing member. Susan became the House Manager for her first MMT show Chicago. In 2016, Susan succeeded Matt Krage as President of the organization. Susan has taught secondary science for the Hibbing School District since 1987. Originally from Cloquet, MN, Susan has become an Iron Ranger deep in her heart raising three daughters, Ariel, Kelsey, and Lily Nelson, in Hibbing. Susan is married to Jeff Schaefbauer and has a step-daughter, Haley Schaefbauer, and two very spoiled dogs. Susan began her love of theatre at Cloquet High School being President of the Cloquet Drama Club, Student Director of Once Upon a Mattress, and building all the chorus costumes for The Wizard of Oz, as well as acting in all the shows. Susan has directed children’s, middle school, high school, and community theatre for over 30 years. She has also acted and costumed for various community groups. The highlights of Susan’s theatre career so far have been directing Fiddler on the Roof in Hibbing where her daughter Lily played “Golde,” playing Motel’s mother in the same production at Ironworld under the direction of Vern Wenberg, having a high school group perform on the stage of the Guthrie Theatre with the author of the play – E. Jack Williams – in attendance, and playing Ren’s “Aunt Lulu” in Footloose, as well as being a judge for Minnesota State High School League One-Act Play and Speech Contests. Susan is sure there are more highlights to come!
